Registration, Exam, and License

The first step in starting out is the registration process, then the exam, and you procure your license at the end. Let’s start with the registration. You may follow the tips and steps below to begin.

To start the registration process, you must check your eligibility.

Step 1: VERIFY YOUR ELIGIBILITY

To apply for any exam, you must be eligible for it. The state sets the eligibility criteria. The criteria given below are applicable to the State of Utah.

  • You must be at least 17 years of age.
  • You must complete one of the following criteria.
    • You must be licensed by an accredited cosmetology school in Utah.
    • You must have completed a cosmetology school program from a Utah Department of Education-approved school.
    • You must have completed an apprenticeship program from a Utah state-approved school/college.

Apart from these requirements, you must complete the minimum practical hours required to be eligible to take the State of Utah cosmetology examinations in the following fields:

  • Cosmetology license: 1600 hours
  • Esthetician license: 600 hours
  • Nail Technician license: 300 hours
  • Barber license: 1000 hours

You may also have an apprenticeship which would require more hours than regular training.

Step 2: APPLY FOR THE UTAH STATE BOARD OF COSMETOLOGY EXAMINATIONS

Step 3: SCHEDULE YOUR EXAM

After registering with the board, Prov will schedule your exam at the nearest exam center. You have to click on the schedule option to check for the closest exam center. You have to now schedule your exam by choosing the date and time.  Once you have scheduled the date and time proceed to complete the payment. You can complete the payment via MasterCard, VISA, or AMEX. After the successful payment, you will get an invoice that will contain the date and time information.

The board is available 24 hours a day at that number. They have an automated response and scheduling system. The Prov officials are available Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. M.T.

  • The exam is computer-based and is 90 minutes long.
  • You must take the test on your personal computer.
  • Ensure that you have a stable internet connection to take the test.

Step 4: ON THE DAY OF THE EXAMINATION

When appearing for the exam, bring the application letter and required documents for the Utah Cosmetology State Board Along with two forms of identification to present at the venue. One of the IDs should contain your signature. Government-issued IDs are the only acceptable forms of identification.

Forms of primary identification,

  • US State-issued Driver’s License.
  • US State-issued ID card.
  • US Government-issued Passport.
  • US Government-issued Military Identification Card.
  • US Government-issued Alien Registration Card.

Ensure all IDs are valid and not expired.

Forms of secondary identification,

  • A signed credit card in your name.
  • Any US state-issued birth certificate.
  • Social security number.

Step 5: TAKE THE EXAM

Now that you are done with all the registration and scheduling, it is time to take the exam.

    • The exam is a computer-based assessment. It is 90 minutes long.
    • Arrive at the venue 30 minutes before to prevent any inconveniences. You may need the time to check your seating and location, etc.

Step 6: GET YOUR RESULTS

The results will arrive in the mail to your registered mail ID after the exam. You must score a minimum of 75 points to pass the exam and obtain the Utah Cosmetology License. The results will contain your pass or fail status in the practical and written exams.

Step 7: RECEIVE YOUR COSMETOLOGY LICENSE

If you have passed the exams, there’s nothing stopping you from getting your license.

Now, you must pay the license fee and procure your license. The amount and the last date of payment will be sent to you in the mail. Once you send back the filled application form and fee, you will receive your license within the next 30 days.

The Utah Board of Cosmetology/Barbering has contracted with Prov Inc. to administer all the cosmetology exam, licensing, and result processes.

HOW DO I TRANSFER MY COSMETOLOGY LICENSE TO UTAH?

If you are planning to transfer your cosmetology/barber license to Utah, you must have a license equal to or higher than the ones issued by DOPL. Before applying for the Utah reciprocity, you must check that you have completed the minimum number of practical hours.

Apart from that, you must have a minimum score of 75%  in both your state cosmetology written and practical exams. If you have ticked off all of these, then you may apply for the Utah cosmetology license reciprocity.

HOW DO I RENEW MY COSMETOLOGY LICENSE IN UTAH?

The general expiration date of the Utah cosmetology license is September 30 of every odd year. You may renew your license 60 days prior to the expiration date.
