Steps Involved in Indiana State Cosmetology Exam

STEP 1: VERIFY YOUR ELIGIBILITY

The first step to taking the State Board of Cosmetology Exam is to register yourself for the exam. You can register yourself on the official website of the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology. Before you go ahead with the registration part, it is important to ensure that you are eligible to apply for the exam.

Here are some of the basic eligibility criteria set by the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The application must be accurate and complete upon receipt to process the application fully.
  • You must have completed 10th grade or equivalent.

Indiana State Board of Cosmetology has minimum practical working hours requirements and they are:

  • 1500 hours for a Cosmetology License.
  • 1500 hours for a Barber License.
  • 700 hours for an Esthetician License.
  • 450 hours for a Nail Technician License.
  • 300 hours for an Electrologist License.
  • Cosmetology License + 1000 hours for a Cosmetology Instructor License.
  • 500 hours for a Massage Therapist License.

Application Fee of $40 must be attached along with the application.

STEP 2: APPLY FOR THE INDIANA STATE BOARD OF COSMETOLOGY EXAMINATION

Once you meet the eligibility criteria set by the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology, you can apply for the exam. You may register yourself by accessing the application on the official website of the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology.

To apply for the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology exam, you will have to register yourself at the official website of PSI. You will have to log onto PSI’s website and create an account. STEP 3: PAY YOUR EXAM FEES

The exam fee for the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology is as follows:

  • The examination fee is $48.
  • The re-Examination fee is $48.

And the exam fee:

  • $48 for Cosmetologist, Manicurist, Esthetician, Electrologist, and Instructor.
  • $44 for Barber.

NOTE: Exam fees are not transferable or refundable but it is valid for one year from the date of payment.

STEP 4: SCHEDULING OF YOUR EXAM

Once you pay your exam fee, the next step is to schedule your exam. To schedule your exam, you will have to log onto PSI’s official website and create an account by entering the required details.

The primary identification documents are as follows:

Any one of the following (with photo).

  • Driver’s License issued by the State.
  • An identification card issued by the State.
  • Passport issued by the Government.
  • Government-issued a Military Identification Card.
  • Government-issued Alien Registration card.
  • An identification card, issued by the Canadian Government.
  • Student ID (Valid and unexpired).

The secondary identification documents are as follows:

Any one of the following:

  • Credit card (must be signed).
  • Social Security card.
  • Birth certificate with raised seal issued by the US government.

To reschedule or cancel your examination appointment, you will have to notify them 2 days prior to your scheduled examination date. You might forfeit your exam fee in case of late or missed cancellation.

STEP 5: ON THE EXAMINATION DAY

On the day of the exam, you should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the appointed time. This will help you have a smooth and hassle-free identification verification and sign-in. You will not be allowed to take the exam if you arrive late. You will forfeit your exam fee if you do not appear or appear late for the examination.

STEP 6: TAKE THE EXAM

The exam duration is as follows:

  • Cosmetologist – 120 mins.
  • Nail Technician (Manicurist) – 90 mins.
  • Esthetician – 90 mins.
  • Electrology – 90 mins.
  • Barber – 120 mins.
  • Instructor – 90 mins.

The exam will be administered via computer. You will be directed to a semi-private testing station and will be provided with a mouse and a computer keyboard during the exam. Once you are seated at the testing station, you will have to confirm your name, identification number, and the exam you register yourself.

STEP 7: RESULTS ANALYSIS

You will be provided with your score immediately after the completion of your exam. The score reporting process is as follows:

  • If you pass, you will receive a successful score report immediately.
  • If you do not pass, you will receive a report indicating your strengths and weaknesses immediately after the exam.

You should have to score of 75% or above to pass the examination.

STEP 8: RECEIVE YOUR INDIANA STATE BOARD COSMETOLOGY LICENSE

The fee for Cosmetologist, Barber, Esthetician, Manicurist, Electrologist and Instructor license are:
